Principal Band Picnic in the Park
The weather on Sunday afternoon of 11th July couldn't have been better for the Picnic in the Park concert - although perhaps too hot for some as many of the audience took to the shade under the trees.
It was fabulous to see so many people turn up at the Verwood Recreational Ground for the concert which coincided with Brass Fest UK , an initiative whereby bands up and down the country were encourage to put on free concerts for their community. It is great to know the people of Verwood appreciate the band.
The band also opened the second half with the specially commission Brass Fest UK piece called 'Spirit of Brass'. Thanks go to guest conductor Jonathan Lush-Camps who was standing in for Kevin Smith.
It was a splendid way to spend a lazy, hot, sunny Sunday afternoon, sitting back listening to great, entertaining music with many also enjoying a cuppa and cake.

Richard Ely Trust - Verwood Youth Band
A few weeks ago on Friday 7th July the Verwood Youth Band performed a 20 minute set at the Richard Ely Trust for Young Musicians concert held at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown.
The Richard Ely Trust for Young Musicians is passionate about helping young people to develop their talent and love of music. Its purpose is to promote, improve, develop and advance education in and the appreciation of music in all its aspects for young people under the age of 21 resident in or educated within Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole with a particular view to assisting those in financial hardship.

Summer Hub Concert
What a fantastic show! There was certainly a buzz of excitement at the Verwood Hub where all three bands of VCB performed wonderful sets of music.
There was so much variety ranging from the Training Band's un-classic classical piece 'Toccata in D Minor', the Town Band's brass band classic of 'The Floral Dance' to the far from classic brass band piece 'Just a Closer Walk', a New Orleans street jazz number, from the Verwood Concert Brass Band.
There were also a couple of fabulous solo performances, one from Angela Moran on Baritone playing the beautiful John Golland arrangement 'Peace', and another from Erik Jonassen on Flugel Horn playing a great version of 'Under the Boardwalk'.

Trinity School Fete

White Horse Brassed Off
Here are some photos from last Sunday of the Town Band's new gig this year - taking part in the White Horses' series of Brassed-off events where they invite local bands to play.
With it being so hot it was fabulous to be performing outside even as the evening drew in. The audience were very appreciative too.
Well done to the The White Horse Inn for this initiative and for inviting the band. Let's hope they continue with it in future years . . . and we get invited back!

Cranborne Church Fete
Here are a few photos from Cranborne Church Fete and as you will see from the images it is such a lovely setting in the grounds of Cranborne Manor, especially with the sun shining.
It was quite cosy squeezing the band into the shade of the gazebo, although no chance for the drummer and bass player to squeeze in as well!
The band played really well and were much appreciated by the organisers for adding a traditional musical flavour to a traditional village fete. Marvellous!

Spring Concert 2017
The VCB Spring Concert at The Verwood Hub on Saturday 1st April saw the Verwood Training Band, Verwood Town Band and Verwood Concert Brass Band all providing wonderful entertainment to a packed auditorium.
This was despite some unforeseen player absences due to amongst other things, appendicitis and cracked ribs! But this is where VCB’s strength in depth comes through with players helping out in the other bands to fill the gaps.
Even so, with the last-minute illnesses there had to be a change to the published programme for the Verwood Concert Brass Band. Unfortunately, with a euphonium player down out went the euphonium duet but far from being short changed the audience (and the band) were surprised when conductor Kevin Smith handed out the sheet music to the band right there on stage and promptly played a superb bass trombone solo of ‘I only have eyes for you’. It is handy when your conductor is also the bass trombone player for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra! And well done the band for providing the unrehearsed accompaniment.
Likewise, in the second half Kevin stepped in to perform the trombone trio ‘Frolic for Trombones’ alongside Emma Button and Georgina Carter, with Training Band Conductor and Verwood Concert Brass Band bass player, Mike Dunnings, taking over the baton. There’s versatility for you.
The event also saw the presentation of the annual ‘Player of the Year’ awards for each of the bands but news of the winners will be covered in a separate posting in due course.

Reflections on last weekend’s regional finals

Now the dust has settled on an eventful weekend of banding let’s take a moment to reflect on what just happened.
The West of England regional finals are always a great event where bands throughout the region come together in Torquay to compete but also take the opportunity to soak up the wonderful atmosphere and meet up with old banding buddies.
As has been said many times, making music is an art form rather than a science, so the results will be down to the opinions of the adjudicators on that day. Up and down the country though, where bands have not done as well as expected there will be accusations that the adjudicators got it wrong but for those that did well, then the adjudicators are beyond reproach and were of course spot on.
For Verwood Concert Brass having had Verwood Town Band compete in the 4th Section and Verwood Concert Brass Band compete in the Championship Section and met with different outcomes, then all the more important, as per our pre contest Facebook post, to meet triumph and disaster with equal good grace.
For Verwood Town Band, yes being 12th out of 20 bands was disappointing compared to 5th place last year but it was far from being a disaster. Everyone agreed that the band played really well, including online brass band magazine, 4BarsRest, who in its reckoning had put the band in 5th place. However, the adjudicators were of the view that on this occasion 11 bands played this particular test piece just that bit better or more in line with their interpretation of how the piece should be played, and that’s their prerogative.
Does that mean Verwood Town Band is not such a good band? Not a jot. It is well recognised that under the direction of Musical Director, Emma Button, the band has improved enormously and continues to do so. In other contests the band has beaten 3rd Section and even a 2nd Section band, so knows it can mix it with higher graded bands. What’s more the band will still head to next year’s finals in a strong position. Based on provisional grading points it will be in joint 5th place – being a top quartile band is no bad place to be!
Most importantly Verwood Town Band is a happy band and will return to the band room, whilst seeing what can be learned from the adjudicators comments, will be eager to get ready for our busy Spring and Summer concert schedule, to entertain very appreciative audiences.
For Verwood Concert Brass Band, whether the jubilant celebrations of coming 3rd in the Championship Section met the ‘good grace of triumph’ criteria may be open to some debate, for those not familiar with the brass band world one may wonder why coming 3rd, which in itself is a very good result, did meet with such triumphant jubilation – it was like they had come first.
Here’s the back story. Verwood Concert Brass Band gained promotion to the Championship Section only a year ago and at last year’s regional contest they came 9th out of 13 bands. Not a bad result but with the bottom two bands being demoted to the 1st Section, the band entered this year’s contest in 13th position out of 14 bands. Thus, another bottom half result this year could well have seen Verwood Concert Brass demoted.
The challenge in the Championship Section is that all bands are excellent but some are more excellent than others. There are six bands, most with a long history of being a Championship band, conducted by highly renowned musical directors and who are ranked in the top 60 of the best brass bands in the world, with Flowers band being ranked 5th and who has won the contest for the last five consecutive years. Bear in mind Verwood is currently ranked 116th in the world.
So it is, that normally, the contest is of two halves. These top bands vie for the top six finishing spots with the other bands striving to have done enough to avoid demotion for another year.
Hopefully readers will therefore appreciate the significance of Verwood Concert Brass being placed third. Not only did it make history for this being the band’s best ever result in its 153 year existence, it meant that it had been placed higher than four of the top six bands including the 5th ranked band in the world, Flowers, who came 4th and two others ranked 33rd and 37th in the world. It also meant remaining in the Championship Section for at least another year.
With all good grace, the result does not overnight make Verwood Concert Brass Band a better band than Flowers or any of the other bands in the Championship Section. But on that Sunday evening in Torquay it showed that Musical Director, Kevin Smith, was equally as adept at interpreting all of those dots and markings on the musical score and marshalling the players to produce the sound he wanted, and the players were up to the task of delivering what was required of them under the pressure of a contest, to give a quality performance on par with the very best in the business and which clearly met the favour of the adjudicators on this occasion. Every contest will produce different results but this was Verwood’s moment so hence the jubilation but one they can be capable of repeating.
Thank you to all that have praised the band’s performance which has come from many quarters including post contest commentary from 4BarsRest which said;

“Despite just missing out on what would also have been a debut Albert Hall appearance, there was no mistaking the collective joy shown by Verwood Concert Brass, who produced a fine account of [the test piece ‘Pageantry’ by Herbert Howells] to end third, led by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra bass trombonist Kevin Smith. Their opening and closing movements were perhaps the best of the day, with nervousness and fragility just costing them in the 'Cortege' [the middle movement]”.
Let us not forget though that quality does not happen by accident, it takes a lot of time and effort from all concerned but made all the easier by the friendly atmosphere that exists in the band room. So just like Verwood Town Band, it will be back to preparations for entertaining audiences over the Spring and Summer season albeit with an extra sense of achievement and pride.
From all at Verwood Concert Brass we thank the organisers of the event and congratulate all the bands that competed over the weekend, plus those who met or exceeded their expectations. We extend our commiserations to those that might have hoped for better placings, but importantly carry on enjoying making music and your time may well come. Also we wish the best of luck to all the winning West of England bands that will represent the region at the national finals later in the year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at Verwood Concert Brass
Just two more concerts to go tonight - Tuckton Church for the Town Band and Sandy Balls for the Verwood Concert Brass Band and that will be our lot for this Christmas.
It has been a busy but delightful few weeks with Christmas concerts and lots of carolling.
Carolling not only brings a bit of seasonal cheer to shoppers but also provides an opportunity to do some fund raising not only to help with the costs of running the band but also to share the proceeds with another charity.
This year we have chosen to support ‘Katie’s New Wheels ’via ‘The Tree of Hope’ charity. This charity’s mission is to transform the lives of sick children and empower families. It offers hope to the families of seriously ill and disabled children in the UK who need specialist medical surgery, treatment and therapy in order to free them from suffering, giving a better quality to their young lives.
Why have we chosen to support fund raising for Katie’s New Wheels? That’s an easy one to answer because Katie has recently joined our Acorns new starter group learning to play the trumpet, so there really can’t be a cause closer to home than this nor more worthwhile.
And the photo in this post is of Katie who came and visited our group of carollers playing at Morrisons, Verwood, this lunchtime.
Katie Green is 10 years old, lives in Ringwood and has cerebral palsy. Living where we do, in and around Verwood, with our lovely forests, beaches and coastline just a stone’s throw away, we can sometimes take it for granted that we can get out and enjoy such beautiful countryside. For Katie and her parents, it’s not so easy. That’s why we have chosen to support the fund raising to purchase an all-terrain wheelchair so she can go out on longer walks with Vinnie, her assistance dog. This new chair will enable Katie to access the forest and beach without an issue.

Christmas Concert 2016
Saturday 17th December
The Verwood Hub was absolutely packed with over 300 people eager to enjoy the Christmas concert and they weren’t disappointed.
The concert kicked off with the ever-enthusiastic Verwood Training Band all dressed up in various Christmassy outfits including conductor Mike Dunnings in his festive waistcoat. Their set included a sing-a-long ‘Holly and the Ivy’ carol and closed off with the good old favourite of Slade’s ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’.
Next up was the Verwood Concert Brass Band all looking very smart dressed up to the nines and playing some top quality Christmas arrangements such as ‘The Snowman’ and ‘Jingles Bells’. But in a new feature, which will happen in future concerts, a player from one of the other bands will be invited to play a solo with the principal band. On this occasion, it was Naomi Selby-Grace on cornet, who plays in the Training Band, Youth Band and Town Band, that had the wonderful opportunity to perform ‘Silent Stars Go By’. Very well done Naomi.
After the interval Verwood Town Band, also dressed up in Christmas costumes too, got straight to it with some audience participation of swaying and standing up (and how could you not?) to a great rendition of ‘Schneewalzer’, plus a sing-a-long to ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’, and closing off their set with another popular foot-tapper, ‘Stop the Cavalry’.
Back on with Verwood Concert Brass Band to close the show and what a hilarious start to the set with Steve Rowland ‘performing’ the ‘Yuletide Gallop’ on post horn – it must be seen to be believed - See video clip below.
By way of contrast Ian Harris on euphonium then gave a sublime solo performance of ‘O Holy Night’. Further audience participation occurred with ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and ‘Hark the Herald’. The Band really demonstrated how it was now the best band in Dorset and now ranked 111th in the world by closing the concert with a very powerful performance of ‘Kingdom Triumphant’ but sent a very happy audience home with smiles on their faces with an encore piece of ‘Christmas Bolero’.

On this occasion, it was Naomi Selby-Grace on cornet, who plays in the Training Band, Youth Band and Town Band, that had the wonderful opportunity to perform ‘Silent Stars Go By’. Very well done Naomi.
After the interval Verwood Town Band, also dressed up in Christmas costumes too, got straight to it with some audience participation of swaying and standing up (and how could you not?) to a great rendition of ‘Schneewalzer’, plus a sing-a-long to ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’, and closing off their set with another popular foot-tapper, ‘Stop the Cavalry’.
Back on with Verwood Concert Brass Band to close the show and what a hilarious start to the set with Steve Rowland ‘performing’ the ‘Yuletide Gallop’ on post horn – it must be seen to be believed - See video clip below.
By way of contrast Ian Harris on euphonium then gave a sublime solo performance of ‘O Holy Night’. Further audience participation occurred with ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and ‘Hark the Herald’. The Band really demonstrated how it was now the best band in Dorset and now ranked 111th in the world by closing the concert with a very powerful performance of ‘Kingdom Triumphant’ but sent a very happy audience home with smiles on their faces with an encore piece of ‘Christmas Bolero’.

Double Contest Triumph!
Saturday 26th November
What a day!
The Verwood Town Band seem to have a jinx on being drawn to be the first band to play but no worries because the band produced an excellent performance winning the cup for the highest placed 4th Section Band.
But what's more the band came 8th overall meaning it beat at least one 2nd section band. Very well done the Town Band.
As for the Verwood Concert Brass Band - well here is the list of what they won!
Best Bass Section - The Arthur Spencer Trophy - congratulations Duncan Smith, Jane Cotee, Mike Dunnings and Nigel Tiller.
The conductor having the best musical interpretation of the score - The South Wilts Cup - well done Kevin Smith (a very nice belated birthday pressie for yesterday).
Best Instrumentalist - The Kevin Bolton Plaque - VCB's principle cornet player Elaine Close - just brilliant!
The highest placed Championship Section Band - The Christopher Wren Cup - Verwood Concert Brass.
OVERALL WESSEX CHAMPION - The Pitt Rivers Cup - VERWOOD CONCERT BRASS.
The band also had the honour of playing a short concert at the end of the day whilst the results were being collated. This met with great applause from a room full of brass band aficionados.
So all in all a fantastic day and so nice to have done so well at our local brass band contest. Well done all and to all the other bands and special award winners.

Verwood pays its respects
Sunday 13th November
Verwood Concert Brass were honoured to be part of the Remembrance Sunday service and parade.
Having played hymns at the packed church service, the band lead the parade to the war memorial playing the British Legion March where a large crowd had gathered for the wreath laying ceremony.
Very well done to Sophie Howes, Verwood Concert Brass's repiano cornet player, for playing the Last Post with such feeling, plus a rousing Reveille.
Occasions such as this are a reminder that the band is very much part of the community and form an important part of our heritage.
