BLUSHING BRASS - Supporting Break Through Breastcancer.

The ladies of VCB spent a day rehearsing with our MD Kevin Smith.  We did have some time off in the afternoon for good behaviour and enjoyed a little pampering where hair, nails and bodies had the opportunity for a bit of a make-over.  Those giving the treatments donated all their takings to the fundraising, so a big thanks to Lynn, Sophie and Emma.

By 5pm, Verwood Memorial Hall had been transformed into a setting like 'Confetti' with pink and purple tables covered in glitter and a centre point of a cake stand filled with fabulous cup cakes.

The concert went down a storm and the audience were delighted to be waited upon by the VCB waiters, Kieron, Robert and Robin who looked like bouncers but had no work in that field as the audience were all very well behaved!

We were very privileged to be able to perform a piece of music that was written specially for the occasion by Derek Broadbent.  Easy on the Eye, Easy on the Ear went down a storm  - and for the less able musicians it was actually quite difficult to play, Derek!!

There were many thanks required to all who made the day possible, but the biggest had to go to Jan Tiller who had the vision and made it happen and also to Sally Mullins and her mum and dad, Kate and Clive Ward who spent their entire day preparing food, collecting crockery and washing up.

This e mail received the following day sums up the view of the audience -

"What a wonderful evening – please thank everyone involved in making it such a success – the ladies in the band, the extra-ordinary members, the waiters, everyone.  The hall was a delight to walk into, it must have taken hours to prepare.  Do hope you all enjoyed your long day rehearsing and preparing for the evening – you must have all been shattered but on a high. The cakes were something else !!!

We really enjoyed Easy on the Eye, Easy on the Ear and hope we can hear it again sometime in the future. "  -  Michael

Race for Life

Congratulations to Jan Tiller and Kay Butler who ran the Race for Life at Kinston Lacy on 12^th May.

Jan and Kay raised an incredible £400 for Cancer UK.

2012 Contesting Season Ends on a High Note!

On Saturday 1st December the Verwood Concert Brass A Band took a trip down to Weymouth for the 56th Annual Winter Brass Band Contest run by the Wessex Brass Band Association.  Rather than having a set test piece, bands could choose a test piece to play and in addition also play a march. Verwood chose "Essay" by Edward Gregson as its test piece and "Castell Coch" by T.J.Powell for the march.  The Band played well and did themselves proud by coming 2nd out of the 1st section bands contesting and being placed 3rd overall. Hopefully this bodes well for more good results in 2013.

Training Band In Good Form

The Training Band put on a good show at their coffee morning last Saturday.


The audience in Verwood Memorial Hall were entertained for the whole morning by our talented Training Band conducted by Robin Lock.

Torquay Contest November 3rd 2012

Verwood A plus supporters travelled to Torquay this weekend for the 66th Annual Championship of the South West Brass Band Association.

The 1pm rehearsal did not quite work out as planned because, although the band were all there, the key holder was not!  Never mind, the rehearsal finally started half an hour later and Kevin seemed happy. 

Scottie had work to do!

Verwood finally played at 6pm and gave a very polished performance, greatly appreciated by all their supporters.

The Band was very happy with 5th position as they were competing against some Championship bands and felt that all the hard work was worthwhile - Weymouth next - watch this space

The flags were out for the Proms Concert on Sunday 7th October

Kevin Smith provided an entertaining program played by the A band. 

The house was packed and the audience in good voice when the massed Band played Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance No.1.  

Sadly, this was James Haigh' last concert with Verwood B as he tries to juggle a very busy life with Fatherhood.  Baby Nicholas seemed very at home with an audience and is likely to follow in his father's footsteps.

We shall all miss James and Jenny but hope they will come and play with us from time to time.
